Sharpen Your Skills and Attain the Competitive Edge
I'm sure we all wish that we could simply wave a magic wand that would allow us to suddenly skate like Coffey or Bobby Orr. Unfortunately, we know that this is not going to happen, and in fact, there is no magic relating to Coffey or Orr's skating skills either.
Their greatness comes from working hard and understanding the proper skating techniques and fundamentals. You can definitely make great improvements in your skating if you begin to put these fundamentals to work by visualizing and feeling what you are doing, both correctly and incorrectly. Remember that you can get better at any age or skill level and that pro teams continue instruction time and time again.
So try not to get frustrated when practicing your skating. Sometimes the strides you make can be very subtle and may take a long time to achieve, but they are worth it in the long run -when you skate better, the game is much easier to play and certainly much more fun.
I've watched many hockey players - every age, every level - from timbit to pro. I still cringe at the terribly small percentage of pros who are great skaters. Most parents want coaches to skate their child hard, make them work, get them tired. They want their child to come off the ice with their tongues hanging out, crawling to the locker room (so they'll sleep well that night)? Is this a measure of learning?
How important is power skating? Kids are put out on the ice with a stick and puck and told, skate. They are not taught how to skate, but just, skate (fast). The assumption is that by skating more and (moving the legs) a million miles an hour they'll skate faster.
Wrong! They may learn to move their legs fast, but they may end up going nowhere fast. A player wants to be able to skate faster (more speed). A coach may tell the player to "skate faster", but without any improvement in strength or technique, a player’s speed will be limited by their ability to apply their current strength into their skating. By learning the proper skating process, with proper stride, balance, edge control, etc., the player will achieve the end result of going faster.
In our Power Skating schools we teach each part of a skating maneuver separately. We then combine the parts to create the whole (completed) move. Each maneuver has many parts.
There is no short cut so don't expect to become a great skater after one power skating program. But stay positive and stay committed to the long term. I suggest at least 2-4 power skating schools per year. Forward and backward skating is so important in the development of a hockey player.
Power Edge Power Skating is not a conditioning clinic. Our focus is on developing proper skating technique and teaching the players the concepts behind the techniques so they can better understand the system. The players will develop a Longer stride, use Less energy, and will be able to skate Faster!
The players who attend our schools over the long term, learn how to properly execute every maneuver in the entire hockey repertoire. They become not just fast, but powerful, stable, explosive and efficiently fast.
The instructors usually start off the first session by working on forward and backward skating. The reason for this is because the rest of the clinic builds off of techniques that are covered within these two basic techniques.
Here are some of the things we do at our power skating schools:
Forward skating/Deep knee bend/Edge control/Inside edges/Outside edges/Length of stride/Full extension/Toe flick/Full return/Proper arm swing/Backward Skating/Correct ankle pivot/Weight transfer or getting most power out of push/Forward Crossovers/Strong knee bend/Correct use of body positioning and body weight/Stride push/Backward Crossovers/Explosive Starts, Forward Toe Starts
The above is offered to you as a guideline only. The actual order and the skills presented will vary based on the instructor's assessment of the skill level of the players. The instructor may skip over some parts in order to focus on skills that need more work or may present additional material not covered above.
